A Safari Adventure With Wild Kids Books

A Safari Adventure With Wild Kids Books

Reading is dreaming with open eyes!

I have always been a little bookworm, ever since I can remember I was that weird child who always had my head buried into some book wherever I went – whilst walking around the school, driving in a car, eating at a restaurant and even on holiday. There just was no better place to escape to than the pages in a book. That love for reading has been carried with me well into adulthood and it’s the one thing I wish to pass onto my children, because reading truly is one of the most important building blocks in life. It saddens me to see how little kids care about reading in the new technological era and as a teacher I see the impact and deal with the consequences of this on a daily basis, so when A was born I made it my mission to develop a love for reading in him from the get-go. I truly believe that when you make reading fun, a child’s imagination does the rest and it’s my goal to help my child find that in the pages of a book, you just need to find the right books. We make reading fun through bedtime stories where we read together or a new favorite is asking him to close his eyes while I read the story to him, and he then needs to try and imagine being the character on these adventures. We also enjoy book scavenger hunts around the garden and little picnics under a tree or in his teepee while we eat, laugh and read. There are so many adventures to be discovered, we just need to put aside a little time (and technology) to actually help them find them.

Recently we discovered a whole new adventure and we are thrilled to finally share it with you. A has been begging me to go on a Safari, but instead we brought the Safari to us with a little help from Wild Kids Books SA! They introduced A to 3 of his new favorite friends – 8 year old Sophia, 6 year old Asher and their little 4 year old sister Isla-Mae. A was able to join them as they explore the African bush in search of adventure and new animals to learn about. The Sofia Safari series is a series of children’s books, with a special book dedicated to each letter of the alphabet, whilst featuring animals that start with that particular letter. This series is filled with fun facts of African animals Sophia and her family discover while exploring the African bush. A got to join in on the adventures of the Hyena and the Honey Badger (book 8) and the Lion and the Leopard (Book 12) of the African Animal Alphabet Series and what an awesome adventure it’s been. But what makes these books so special you may ask…well let’s get right into that.

A little more about Wild Kids Books SA

Wild Kids Books are written by Kayleigh – a farmer’s wife and mom to Sophia, Asher and Isla-Mae who lives in Zululand where they run a sugarcane farm and Game reserve in Mkuze together, whilst homeschooling her 3 children. This has led Kayleigh to create reading material that is not only educational, but also enriching, engaging and fun. Kayleigh’s books are based on their own personal, fun adventures as a family living their wild life where wildlife, birding, conservation and farming are the center of the stories. Knowing that the adventures in these books are not purely fictional, but a part of their journey definitely brings a special touch to it and the way that it is written and illustrated makes it feel like you are right there with them on all of these amazing adventures.

What we liked about the Wild Kids Books:

1.The illustrations

The illustrations in these books are adventurous in it’s own! They tell you a story before you even get to the story. I love that the illustrations are vibrant, modern and fun and that it creates a sense of freedom for kids to use their own imaginations as they page through the books by themselves. A loves using the pictures on each page to create his own personal touch to the adventures. The illustrations definitely gets a double thumbs up from us.

2. Interaction

I love that the Wild Kids Books interacts with kids, making them feel like they are a part of the stories, and not just an outsider reading the stories. Each book introduces your child as a “Wildlife Warrior” and gives them a little space to write their names and the way the fun facts are introduced throughout the books makes you feel like you are right there in the bush, under the tree with the 3 friends being taught by mom or dad.  The Sofia Safari Bushveld Field Guide for wild kids includes some awesome checklists to take along on your bush adventures, some fun activities to entertain them on their adventures and so much more! I can’t wait to take this little book with us on our next hiking/Safari adventure.

3. Educational Aspect

I love that these books are not only fun to read and page through, but that it also educates in a playful and exciting manner. Each book includes a page with fun facts about each of the alphabet animals covered in that book and the fun facts are incorporated into the story and are easy to understand, yet fascinating for both adults and little ones. This is a big hit, because it also encourages children to ask more questions and to want to discover and learnmore. A has memorised most of the facts and loves to use them as little conversation starters when meeting new friends.

4. Local is lekker

I love that these books are written and illustrated by Kayleigh herself, which means that it features not only local adventures but also our own South Africa wildlife which makes it more relatable and exciting as it is wildlife that we know and are familiar with, and that we could easily come across on our own Safari adventures.

Honestly, there’s nothing not to love about these books – they are fun, adventurous, and interesting and we can’t wait to find out what happens on all of their other adventures!
