“They grow up too fast” sounds like just another cliché, that is until you become a parent… I only really started to understand this when I became a mom. As a mom the days can feel so incredibly long, but the years are so so very short. You blink and suddenly they sit, blink again and they crawl, blink-walk, blink-talk, blink and they are 1,2,3 and before you get a chance to come to the realization that your baby is growing up you are hit with the reality that your baby is now a cheeky, sassy and very much independent 3 year old with a will of his own. I have never taken a moment for granted with A, ever since he entered this world I have tried to treasure each and every milestone, to document each and every age, stage and phase, but let’s face it with our busy on-the-go lifestyles this isn’t always easy either, and we tend to still miss a lot. We are not all pro photographers and getting our busy, moving little stars to sit still and look pretty for a photo can sometimes seem like mission impossible. Not just that, but we don’t always have the setting, the props or the tools to get a proper photo and eventually we just give up on it all together. This is why I want to introduce you to a little company called Blink Portraits.
Who is Blink Portraits?
Blink portraits is a little company that was launched in 2020 by Monique and Robyn, two women intent on making the lives of parents simpler, and easier. Blink Portraits is their gift to busy moms and dads – a way to capture your little one’s growth in the most beautiful, yet stress-free way, through easy, peasy, fast as lightning milestone memories. Their top professional photographers are focused on getting the absolute best photo of your tiny human within a couple of quick minutes, so no fussy humans because of hours of shooting to try and get the perfect shot. Their photos highlight your little one in his/her specific milestone or age so no over the top props are used, only a fresh contemporary backdrop (which is the same with every session) and a chair. This gives your little one the space and freedom to shine! Blink Portraits are done once every month in a studio and this allows you to truly appreciate the small changes in them from “blink” to “blink”. When we were asked if we would like to bring A in for a shoot I was ecstatic! I always jump at the occasion to get some professionally taken shots of A and they really left such an incredible mark. It was by far one of the best experiences I have had with a company as yet.
What we loved about them:
1.Booking was quick and easy
You book online and it literally didn’t take me more than 3 minutes! It’s simple, straight forward, and easy. Once booked you receive more than 1 follow up email with information and details about your booking all the way up to the day before your booking. Their communication is out of this world, and as a planner this was amazing. I felt prepared and in control.
2. Registration at the venue
Covid has put a lot of extra admin in place and sometimes you end up in line for hours in order to fill out forms, register, etc. For this reason we arrived a little earlier than our given time-slot and I was quite surprised that we were the only ones there. We went straight to registration where we answered a few questions, temperature was taken and within minutes we were ready to shoot.
3. Friendly Staff
I cannot applaud them enough for this. Straight from the get-go we were greeted with such excitement and love and we felt right at home. The staff immediately came down to A’s level and showered him with compliments and even cracked some jokes with him. At first, he was a bit shy and hid behind my legs, but by the time we entered the studio all was forgotten. He had so much fun, and it’s all because of how the staff treated him. On the chair they blew him bubbles and made him giggle and laugh while the photographer did her thing, never pushing him to do anything he didn’t want to do. I think the photos speak for themselves, and because of how they treated us we WANT to go back there again and again!
4. Affordability
I love how their system is designed to share the cost of a full day of professional photography across multiple families. This means that you can afford to take your little one every single month and not miss out on any of their milestones.
5. Effortless
I just love how everything was so simple and effortless. Making the booking, taking A and receiving the photos. I received my photos within 3 days (even though they promise you will receive it within 10 days of the shoot) and my breath was taken away. Everything just ran so smoothly, I didn’t have to send an email asking for things once, I didn’t have to phone them, nag them or anything once. Everything just happened so naturally and wonderfully.
6. Going above and beyond
This is one company that really goes above and beyond for their clients. If you know A you will know that he is cheeky, sassy and BUSY! I don’t think he sat on that chair for more than 1 minute at a time, but they were so patient with him, so kind and loving. I did not know how that photographer was going to get a single pretty photo of him, but their passion for kids definitely show in their work and just look at the photos! They went above and beyond from the moment I made the booking until the moment that I received my photos, and for that I am grateful!
7. The set up
This is something I thought might not work, but I actually do like it in a weird kind of way. I originally thought that using the same chair and the same background for every single shoot, every month might be a bit too much, but now when I look at the photos, I get the idea and I actually love it. I love how it emphasizes your child’s look and personality at every age and phase and it kind of gets me excited to think that in 12 months you’ll have these 12 photos that you can flip through and see exactly how your child aged, changed and grew in that year, step-by-step, blink-by-blink. It’s creative and so so smart!
8. Raw and Honest photos
I love how they captured A EXACTLY as he is. The photos show his personality wonderfully – all of his sass, all of his cheekiness and even his business. The photos are raw and honest with no over the top editing or forced poses. It’s my boy perfectly imperfect and I love it.
What we didn’t like:
The only thing that I wish they had was maybe more venue choices. The studio is based in Johannesburg North which is quite a distance from where we are and I so wished they had a closer venue to us, BUT that being said after attending one of the sessions I really don’t mind the drive for the service we got. It was well worth it and I would definitely do it again without a doubt in my mind.
Final thoughts:
This company just proved that the little things matter – from how you greet your clients to how you send them on their way and they left a lasting impression on our lives. We are often so scared to blink, because we might open our eyes just to find that our babies aren’t babies anymore… but I say trust BLINK to capture those memories so that we never miss them again.
